Preparing Your Landscape for the Cold Months Ahead
Autumn marks the last time of the year when outdoor activities can be enjoyed without the threat of freezing temperatures. This is the time of year we can delight in fire pits and football, friends, family, and the brilliant display of foliage bestows upon us.
While fall’s cooler temps may keep us indoors more often, it’s important to remember there is still some outdoor work to be done. As tree leaves change from green to red, yellow, orange, and finally brown, they fall to the ground, littering your grass and landscape beds. Much the same, plants begin their descent into winter’s dormancy period, and everything bright and colorful begins to look dull and grey.
Here are some critical things to do to your yard this Fall, to help it return to it’s natural beauty in the Spring:
- Rake up leaves to avoid winter rot
- Protect perennial plants, trees, and flowers from frigid temps
- Late-season weed to maintain tidy appearance
- Fertilize lawn and plants to sustain them through winter
- Prune trees and shrubs to ensure productive spring growth
- Cut back on perennials and remove dead leaves and flowers
- Replace summer annuals with fall selections for seasonal interest
- Winterize water features
